How to Teach French Verb Conjugation - Part 3

This is the third part of my “How to Teach French Verb Conjugation” series of blog posts.

In this new blog post series, I am sharing my experience teaching French verb conjugation specifically using one activity for Distance Learning. Yes, as discussed before, teaching French verb conjugation needs to be done with enthusiasm and a variety of engaging ideas. Even more so when you are teaching online!
If you haven’t seen part 1 and part 2 of this series of posts, be sure to check them out.

Like some of you already know my teaching style, I love incorporating games in my classroom. I love seeing my students engaged and I have found that they are so much more willing to learn French grammar with some fun games! Today, I bring a new idea to the table.  Our students are surrounded by pixelated art in the games they play and in the shows they watch.

As a result, I decided to include this into my lessons by creating a pixel art series. These activities are filled with anticipation, enthusiasm, and... French verb conjugation! Your students will be too busy solving the picture to be bored with conjugating the French verbs.

If you are looking for a great way to engage your students while practicing French grammar concepts, conjugating verbs and practicing French Vocabulary, these French Pixel Art Resources will be great for you! Your students will love to watch the mystery picture appear while practicing any verbs in the present tense, grammar concepts and French vocabulary for French 1 beginners or intermediate.

So MANY PREPS and Need a Flexible French Distance Learning Activity?

If you have multiple preps and you are tired of needing to adapt to the new platforms/learning systems that your school district has suddenly adopted, the following activity is the perfect resource for you! Having to move from Google Classroom to Microsoft Teams, I told myself that I need resources that will be compatible with any platform.

As a teacher, we already have so many things on our plate and I truly do not like to replicate my work unnecessarily. So, during Spring, as I was working with my classes and coming up with new digital resources, I decided this time to create a new product line where I can always use my resources no matter what school district I end up working with. I also needed a digital resource that is self-assessing,  and doesn’t need me to spend more time grading! And I also do not want to pay extra money or a yearly fee in order to use other apps.

Bearing this in mind, I created this activity so that it is compatible with all Learning Management Systems.  Yes, you read that correctly… all management systems! So, whether you use Google Classroom™, Microsoft Teams™, ClassDojo™, SeeSaw™, Schoology™, ITSLearning™, Canvas™, Moodle™, Blackboard™ etc, you can use this activity!

Let me explain how this works:

Students are presented with a Google sheet or Excel sheet (both versions are included for your convenience). So, it’s perfect for your Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams or any Learning Management Platform!  As students conjugate the French verbs, the picture will partially appear/reveal itself, when the answer is correct. The more correct answers inserted, the more complete the picture becomes. If the answer is incorrect, no partial picture will be revealed. This helps students to quickly get feedback on their answers. There is no grading needed on your part. Teachers can tell right away by looking at the final pixel art picture of the students if they were able to complete the task correctly.

This resource is available in all the common French Verbs, French Grammar Concepts and French Vocabulary.

No Grading! Have more time with this self-checking activity!

This activity is self-checking!  Students will notice their mistakes, when they insert an incorrect answer, by looking at the picture.  This digital activity is perfect for all age groups!  My middle schoolers love the surprise element of this activity as do elementary students or even high school students!

Editable Resources to accommodate all your different preps!

It is such a fun activity. PLUS, it is EDITABLE! Don’t you just L.O.V.E those words!  You are able to edit the questions and answers and still keep the image that will be created! No, you don’t need to know how to code.  It is as simple as inserting the desired content into the correct Google Sheets/Excel Sheets column.  So again for teachers who have multiple preps, you can use the same template picture and just change your questions and answers. Typically it takes me only 5 minutes to change the questions and answers for my other class.

Still struggling with editing the Google Sheets or Excel sheets?  Never fear… I have included instructional videos to help you along the way to create a resource that suits your students’ needs perfectly. And you can always reach out to me at: HoustonFrenchTeacher@gmail.com, I would love to assist you!

Fun Themes with French Verb Conjugation

If you search through my store, you will find a variety of different themes to suit any time of the year.  Check out the Mardi Gras activity to review the French verb Aller (French irregular verbs).

My ultimate and primary goal has always been to make sure that my students are engaged and have fun while learning/practicing their materials. So, I hope your students will enjoy my new product line: Digital Mystery Reveal / Magic Picture as much as my kiddos do. This was their most favorite activity because they were super eager to discover the hidden picture while solving their problems!

Leave a comment below to share your experiences if you have ever tried a Digital Pixel Art activity!

This resource is available in all the common French Verbs, French Grammar Concepts and French Vocabulary.

How to Teach French Verb Conjugation - Part 2

This is the second part of my “How to Teach French Verb Conjugation” series of blog posts. Be sure to check out part 1 to learn how I teach verb conjugation to my middle schoolers.

We all know that students don’t particularly love French grammar or French verb conjugation! Let’s be real, even for me, French grammar was not my favorite thing when I was in elementary school in Paris. I can only imagine how my middle schoolers feel. I usually like to teach grammar in context, but having the basic foundation for French beginners is very essential, so with this in mind, I spend a lot of time thinking of different ways to teach and review grammar to make it interactive and fun.

Activities to Teach French Verb Conjugation

Today I will discuss two activities that I have found to be extremely popular amongst my students.

1. MAZE ACTIVITY

After turning my boring worksheets into a popular video game-inspired activity, my kiddos suddenly started to love conjugating verbs! First, you have to watch for their reactions, the first time you hand out the maze activity. It’s like zombies becoming alive!! Then, you will hear them loudly exclaim “Oh cool!” Yes, that’s the cool factor that makes students want to participate, even the usual reluctant students, they jump into the wagon.

This activity is inspired by the video game Mario. Students need to help the main character move through the maze to reach the end pipe in this Maze activity.

French Verb Conjugation
(Example with multiplications)

Students will conjugate the verbs as they move along the path and they will need to highlight the path that leads them to the exit. By incorporating video games into your French grammar lesson, you will increase engagement. Your students will love completing the activity.

(Example with the verb Avoir, Être, Aller, Faire)

In the event that your students need extra stimulation, I created this activity with an extension version as well. In the extension version, students need to conjugate the verb and translate the sentence.

French Verb Conjugation
(Example with the verb Avoir)

This activity can also be used as an
exit ticket. I tend to choose 5 - 8 sentences or verbs and ask my students to conjugate them or translate them.

Is it offered as a digital resource?

Yes, it is!

You can download the .pdf and print the activity
for in-class teaching. For online teaching, this resource is also compatible with TpT’s Easel activities, giving you more options to suit your students’ needs.

In Easel, for activity 1, students use the highlight tool to mark the route that the character uses to escape the maze. In activity 2, students type in their answers inside the textboxes.
You can assign this activity to Google Classroom.

This maze is available for all Beginner French verb conjugation and it’s perfect for French 1 or French immersion. <You can view the full bundle here for the year-long French Verbs Maze Activities.>

2. COLOR BY VERB

That’s right, another of my students’ favorite activities is the classic color by code! It’s interesting to see that coloring is perfect for any age! Coloring has such a soothing and relaxing effect, students really enjoy switching off for a bit and working quietly on their color-by-code activity.

During this simple activity, I give my students choices. I usually allow them to either sit with their friends and work together or they can choose to do it independently. This is the only activity that I allow my students to use their phones. They can listen to music as long as they complete their work. Surprisingly, 90% of them choose to work with music! I get it …being a middle schooler is not easy, so having an activity where students can have some down time but yet can do some productive work is important!

French Verb Conjugation and french Culture

My students really enjoy this activity. They enjoy practicing conjugating verbs with this fun, relaxing, and engaging Color by Verb activity. I decided to extend the activity by introducing my students to French culture and landmarks. For example, I use the Eiffel Tower, the Arc of Triumph, the Louvre, etc .. as the image to color in all the color by verb resource.

(Teach French Grammar Verb Conjugations with Color by Code)

So if you are looking for mind-breaks/brain breaks, center activities, subfolders, and early finishers resources, this activity is perfect for you! In addition, beginners will have fun learning how to conjugate verbs and discovering the French landmarks! This activity is perfect for in-person learning or hybrid learning.

Some of my products have two versions included to teach French verb conjugation.
Version 1:
Students match the conjugated verb with the subject pronouns. They then color the spaces accordingly to using the assigned colors.
Version 2:
Students create/design their own Color- by-Verb color combinations. They can assign/choose the color for each subject pronoun.

Teach French grammar and language to beginners using this color by conjugation worksheet. Opt to
print the worksheet or complete it using TpT’s digital Easel option. Students can use the color pen or highlighter tool in Easel to color their worksheets.

How to Teach French Verb Conjugation

As teachers, we are always looking for little activities that will help our students with concepts they might struggle with, like to teach French Verb conjugation.

Many of my students find it tricky to conjugate the verb in French.  I created the French Verb Race Game to teach and practice French verb conjugation.  This is a fun, interactive game for my students to use as consolidation of the work learned. The name for this activity was inspired by me frequently telling my students that they ‘must ace grammar’ (well certain rules anyway).  And so, I used the play on words for “MUST-ACE GRAMMAR” to name it MOUSTACHE GRAMMAIRE.

How to teach French Grammar and French Verb for French Beginners? PART 1. This French Verb Race Game will add some FUN into your next French grammar lesson! It focuses on all French 1 verbs & Students will race conjugating French verbs! Increase engagement, focus & learning with games when teaching French grammar to kids. This French for beginners grammar game is available in PRINT & DIGITAL & perfect for in person learning or hybrid learning. Great for French language centers, as a French vocabulary game center, virtual learning games & homeschool.

The aim of the game is to color as many moustaches as possible.  Students do this by conjugating the example called out by the teacher and finding it on their page before their partner does.  Let’s look at the instructions a little closer:

Students are divided into pairs or groups of three. I recommend you do not have larger groups than this, and pairs are ideal.

Students choose a colored marker, highlighter or pen.

The teacher then calls out the subject and infinitive, either in French or in English. For example: “We + To Be” or “Nous + Être”

Students race to find the correct conjugated verb on the page. The first to find the word, colors the moustache in their color.

What happens if they find the word at the same time? No problem, each student colors half of the moustache in.

Sometimes students are lucky to find two of the same verbs, so they can each color a moustache in.

Students count up their moustaches at the end of the game to see who found the most.

It is so versatile...

This game is offered as a printable resource as well as a digital resource which can be used in Google Slides, Jamboard, and as a TpT Easel Activity.  If used in a digital setting, this activity can be used as a whole class game or in a breakout room in pairs or groups of three. This activity is perfect for in-person learning or hybrid learning.

This is by far one of my students’ favorite games to review their grammar.  Because it is fairly easy to prepare and quick to play, we can fit in a game when there are only a few minutes to spare at the end of the lesson. This keeps concepts fresh in their minds, despite it being taught in the past. I hope your students will enjoy it as much as mine.

It is also useful  in the middle of the lesson to re-energize students as they usually get very competitive during this highly engaging game. Students love playing this game, so you can also use it as a reward.  This motivates students to work hard to complete regular grammar worksheets first.
